I’m Ready My Lord – An art display in memory of Leonard Cohen

To mark the first anniversary of the passing of Leonard Cohen, ANU – Museum of the Jewish People presents a video exhibit, based on the song “You Want it Darker”. The video display consists of excerpts from a documentary prepared by the Canadian TV in 1964, and Israeli musicians listening to the song performed by Leonard Cohen in the background.

Leonard Cohen’s final album, ‘You Want it Darker” was released on October 21, 2016. The title track quotes the Kaddish, the mourner’s prayer. Cohen then sings “Hineni, hineni, I’m ready, my Lord.” He died 19 days later, on November 7, 2016.

The Hebrew word Hineni (“Here I am” or “Behold”) appears over 250 times in the Bible. It is said by nearly all of the Bible’s major characters and appears in many of its central stories. Most notably, it is a word said by and associated with God.

Additional vocals for the song “You Want It Darker”, were provided by the cantor and choir of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, Cohen’s childhood synagogue. This special musical collaboration, centering on the word Hineni and the mourner’s Kaddish, is the way that Leonard Cohen chose to say goodbye.
