Rediscovering the Mount Sinai Challah: A Workshop with the “Challah Prince”

Sunday, 25.5.25 // 16:30

FOODISH by ANU Museum brings back to life the “Mount Sinai Challah” – a fascinating (and delicious) piece of our history. The Mount Sinai Challah is part bread, part sculpture, commemorating the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, which Spanish Jewry used to prepare for Shavuot. It is a magnificent and symbolically rich creation, hundreds of years old, that originated in the Golden Age of the Iberian Peninsula, took on different forms in various diasporas, and almost disappeared after the Holocaust.

As part of the Codex Sassoon events, you are invited to make your own Mount Sinai Challah with us. In a braiding workshop led by Idan Chabasov, the “Challah Prince”, we will delve into the story of this mysterious challah and learn to braid a stunning dough creation symbolizing Mount Sinai, the seven heavens, and the stories of the Torah. Join us for a celebration of tradition, creativity, and flavors.

The workshop is for adults and children from age 6 (accompanied by a parent), and held in Hebrew.

At the end of the workshop, each participant or pair will take home a braided and shaped dough, ready for baking at home.

  • Adult (including dough) – ₪99
  • Child (not including dough, for joint work with a parent) – ₪49
  • Child (including dough) – ₪75
