Overview
The Bauhaus 100 years are marked this year throughout the world. Tel Aviv is considered as an outstanding example of the Bauhaus influence outside of Germany. Tel Aviv's White City was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the concertation of 4,000 International Style buildings in the city. In the 1930s, European educated architects brought this architectural style, influenced by the Bauhaus, to the "White city". Yigal Gawze's photography book FORM AND LIGHT | FROM BAUHAUS TO TEL AVIV, was published this year in an English/German edition by the art book publisher Hirmer, Munich. It includes 100 colour photographs, and texts by Gilad Ophir (artist, photographer, and curator), Michael Jacobson (architect, writer and curator) and Yigal Gawze. The book's photographs are part of FRAGMENTS OF A STYLE project, started by Gawze in the 1990s, with the beginning of the restoration of Tel Aviv’s Bauhaus buildings. Tel Aviv born Yigal Gawze, studied architecture in Toronto and photography in Paris. He is engaged in photography and art, explores the modernist architecture in Tel Aviv and conducts in-depth tours on the subject.
