Start Up People, Israeli Innovations
Stemming from the notion that in the modern era Jews have made a unique contribution to the world, the exhibition depicts ideas and innovations that were invented in Israel and have practical, real-world implications that change the lives of people across the globe from both an economic and ecological perspective.
The exhibition showcases five Israeli companies that have sought to enable people to sustain and fulfill their most vital and elementary human needs, from generating safe cooking gas from organic waste to the creation of fresh drinking water out of thin air.
At the Crossroads of Sefarad: In the Footsteps of the Crypto-Jews
The story of the Conversos (Spanish for “convert”) from the Iberian Peninsula is a story about secret, hidden and changing identities. Conversos, Anusim, Crypto-Jews, New Christians and other titles all refer to men and women of the 15th century and on who lived as Christians in public and continued to secretly observe Judaism in the privacy of their homes, developing unique customs that lasted generations. The exhibition, developed in partnership with The Jewish Heritage Alliance, explores the long history of the Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, from the early years of the Roman Empire, through the Golden Age’s economic and cultural prosperity, to expulsions, forced conversions and the story of Crypto Judaism. It sheds new light on the fascinating stories of Crypto-Jews, which are an extraordinary testament to the resilience and strength of their communities, and on their remarkable contributions to world culture.
The publicity and public intrigue surrounding the story of Conversos, in modern Jewish and non-Jewish worlds, reflects a shift in the attitude toward Converso traditions and sheds new light on the fascinating cultures that developed in the Iberian Peninsula and spread around the world.
